Back Mountain’s quest for a Little League Baseball 9-11 state title came to an end Friday evening at the State College Little League.

Council Rock Newtown scored seven runs in the top of the third inning as it defeated Back Mountain 10-1 in an elimination game.

Back Mountain concluded tournament play with the District 31 and Section 5 championships.

Back Mountain scored its only run in the bottom of the third. Jack Katyl opened with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a one-out double by Jayden Dennis to the right-center gap.

Section 3 champion Newtown used Back Mountain miscues and some clutch hitting to score seven times in the top of the third. Its first three batters reached on errors, and Ralphie Giordano later added a two-run double. Michael Izzo brought in the seventh run with a single, making it 9-0.

Giordano also had an RBI triple in the first inning as Newtown took a 2-0 lead.

Back Mountain had other opportunities to score, but unlike a 8-7 walk-off win a day earlier couldn’t produce clutch hits.

Ethan Wielgosz had an infield single and Ollie Bross followed with a walk to put two runners on base with no outs in the first, but a double play and fielder’s choice ended Back Mountain’s threat.

Wielgosz also had a two-out infield single in the fourth. Andrew Salko singled in the fifth and Mac Hanson walked with two outs, but Back Mountain came up empty once again.

Katyl, Dennis and Parker Page walked to load the bases in the sixth, but a flyout ended the game.
