A piece of mail arrived this week at the Times Leader’s office on North Main Street, Wilkes-Barre, that made us reconsider our policy on printing anonymous letters to the editor.

Typically, for a letter to be published in print and online, it must include the author’s full name (or, at minimum, first initial of the first name, plus last name) and the community in which he or she lives. We also require the sender’s phone number, so we can call to confirm the letter’s receipt and get any questions answered.

This letter – hand-written on three-quarters of a torn sheet of paper – contained lots of words printed in all capital letters, several heart symbols, a peace sign, one smiley face and what appears to be a sunshine.

It lacks any of the identifying information that our letter policy calls for; however, today we make an exception. We don’t know who sent the message below and can’t vouch for its depiction of events. But we do endorse its sentiment and hope its author’s outlook on love and life never wavers.

May her “good news” bring you reason to find bright spots throughout your day.

Dearest Times Leader,

I am a 32-year-old female victim to abuse. The Wilkes-Barre Township Police have saved my life tonight and multiple nights before.

The news media need good news once in a while. So, here it goes:

1. Cops are awesome, so don’t get scared when they are behind you in traffic!

2. Officers Allen, Wardle and Ortiz do their jobs to perfection, and without them Wilkes-Barre Township’s night shift would suffer a huge loss.

3. Respect people and give as much love as you can in this lifetime, and if someone doesn’t value it, then let love go where it needs to.

Thank you, Times Leader, if you publish this.

Peace, love and happiness.
