SELINSGROVE — Justin Yavorski, of Dallas, was one of 19 students from Susquehanna University who recently studied in Iceland as part of the university’s Global Opportunities (GO) program.

GO Island/Iceland allows students to spend several weeks touring museums, attending cultural festivals, exploring the natural wonders of this volcanic landscape and learning about Icelandic traditions. Students have the opportunity to develop historical imagination as they look carefully at the relationship between Iceland’s history and contemporary life. They gain an understanding of difference and power; identity politics; and nationalism, citizenship, tourism and globalization by studying the economy, environment and community.

Yavorski is a a creative writing and broadcasting major in the Class of 2020. A 2016 graduate of Dallas High School, he is the son of Kelly Salitis and Blaise Yavorski.

As a cross-cultural requirement, study away is an integral part of a Susquehanna education. All students spend at least two weeks off campus, immersed in a culture different from their own, in the U.S. or abroad. Students reflect upon their experiences when they return, guided by faculty members and coursework that promotes discovery and personal growth. Susquehanna students can choose from study-away programs, ranging from a few weeks to a full semester, in Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, Europe, Puerto Rico and Hawaii, among other options.
