TUNKHANNOCK — “We’re off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz,” with two free showings at 1 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the Dietrich Theater. This beloved American film, “The Wizard of Oz,” is the August free film in the Film Favorite Series. Tickets are available at the door or at the ticket booth.
The movie is based upon the ever-popular book by L. Frank Baum, published in 1900. The Dietrich Theater first opened in 1937 and undoubtedly featured the 1939 film when it first was released. The book and movie have endured for so many years because they tell a “homegrown American fairy tale,” according to the Smithsonian. It is a story for all ages and all times. Many plays of the story have been performed; some are true to the story, some playwrights take poetic license.
Most Americans know something about the story and the now iconic characters: Dorothy, her dog Toto, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, the Wicked Witch of the East, the Good Witch of the North, the Munchkins, and the list goes on. It is a story that is alive in the imagination of so many, for all ages.
The Film Favorite movies are free, thanks to the sponsorship of friends of the Dietrich or businesses or organizations. “The Wizard of Oz” is sponsored by a friend of the Dietrich If you wish to sponsor a Film Favorite movie, call 570-996-1509.
