20 YEARS AGO — 1997

Students in Ellen Boyer’s German class at Dallas Middle School displayed their creations Monday. The class has been making gingerbread houses and other treats since 1978. Showing off their houses are Kris Nardi, Maria Stevens, Rob James, J.P. Urban, Jess Bell, Kristie Kovalick, Elisabeth Eby, Carrie Schoonover, Jonelle Dickson and Ashley Toman.

The Dallas Middle School Parent Support Group sponsored a bingo party at the Meadows Nursing Center recently. Twenty middle-school students volunteered to play bingo and spend the afternoon with nursing home residents. Both the residents and students enjoyed the afternoon. Among the student volunteers were Kaitlyn Musto, Angela Duris, Jessica Duddy and Janell Hetro.

The Lake-Lehman Foreign Language Club recently held their annual Dia de los Muertos fiesta. Students prepared a variety of Mexican foods and wore original pins in celebration of the event. Among the participating students were Angela Davis, Daisy Boice, Shasta Souder, Leah Matusek, Rob Roderick, Tom Brislin, Ryan Mariner, Kenny Weaver, Jen Johnstone and Bridgette Petro.

30 YEARS AGO — 1987

The German Club from Dallas Junior High School recently participated in Luzerne County’s Holiday Fair, held at the Luzerne County Courthouse, Wilkes-Barre. The students prepared traditional German Christmas decorations, gingerbread houses, and they sang Christmas carols in German. Students participating were: Terri Phillips, Kim Stager, Rene Barbacci, Lisa Vozniak, Stacey Roberts, Lisa Owen, Angela Orlando, Debbie Barnoski, Kathy Welkey, Melanie Marino, Tami Francek, Karen Krehely, Karyn Chiarucci and Molly Connolly.

Dallas High School art students recently painted the windows at the Meadows Nursing Home, Dallas, for the holidays. Students who participated in the annual window painting include Jennifer Spear, Pamela Elenchik, Randi Harver, Keith Wandel, Jr., Todd Barket, Kim Metzger, Lisa Hite, Christine Yezilski and Jennifer Wasilewski. The students are under the direction of Mrs. Jane Walzak, Dallas art instructor.

Ursinus College sweeper Sandy Dicton, who led Lake-Lehman High to a district title in 1984 and set a national record, has earned All-America honors in field hockey. Dicton is also a candidate for academic All-America honors with a 3.7 average as a mathematics major.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

The Dallas Junior Woman’s Club held a shopping spree for children of the Back Mountain last Saturday at Gate of Heaven School. The children were able to purchase Christmas gifts for their parents and other relatives and friends for less than a dollar. The women of the club assisted the children. Shoppers and their helpers included Maggie Vojtko assisted Jessica Fritsky, Rita Roginski assisted Joey Goodrich, and Margie Zikor assisted Stacey Fritsky.

Students in the Dallas Junior High German class taught by Mrs. Ellen Boyer observed St. Nicholas Day earlier this month (Dec. 6) as it is done in Germany. The students presented the program at the beginning of the morning announcements presentation. Participants included Lynn Busch, Julie green, Suzanne Santarelli and Nancy Marchlinski.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

Dallas Junior Woman’s Club will distribute Christmas baskets to the needy in the Back Mountain Area. Members of the club will collect canned goods to supplement money donated by the club for this purpose. Collecting in Dallas: Mrs. Robert Rice, Mrs. Robert Stair, Mrs. Peter Duda, Mrs. Leon Brokenshire, Mrs. William Burnaford, Mrs. Leon Adessa. Collecting in Shavertown: Mrs. Paul Lauer, Mrs. Gunther Van Eldon, Mrs. Evan Bonawitz. Collecting in Trucksville: Mrs. Nelson Fey, Mrs. James Parry, Miss Marlyne Lipfert, Mrs. Merton Jones, Mrs. Robert Gardner.

Dallas Kiwanis Women will hold their Christmas Dinner Party on Wednesday evening at Irem Temple Country Club. Mrs. Robert Parry will be in charge of arrangements, assisted by Mrs. Edward Wilson, Mrs. Helen Rice and Mrs. Frederick Anderson.

Robert Besecker was elected president of Dallas Ambulance Association at the annual meeting of that body on Tuesday evening, succeeding James Davies. Other new officers are: David Carey, first vice president; Bob Cartier, second vice; Mrs. Edward Cavan, third vice president; Wesley Cave, Jr., secretary; Edwin Roth, treasurer.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

Somebody sent Mrs. Dorothy Babchalk a Christmas card with a five dollar bill in it after reading about her tough luck in the Dallas Post, when four game commissioners converged upon her after a utility truck struck a deer which later died in her orchard, and levied a fine of $100.

Construction of the Back Mountain area’s first big shopping center will start immediately on five acres of ground opposite Evans Rexall Drug Store, Shavertown. The Back Mountain Shopping Center will include an air-conditioned Acme Super Market and nine other stores similarly air conditioned and all connected by an all-weather canopy convenient for shoppers.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

Members of the Kings’ Daughters’ Class of Idetown Methodist Church will sing Christmas Carols in the church at 7:30 on Christmas Eve. Choir members are: Kathryn Smith, Roxie Hoover, Lois Garinger, Doris Spencer, Lorrain Keller, Janet Brown, Elsie Jean Ide, Elizabeth Gilroy, Ellen Keller, Dorothy Meade, Barbara Williams, Ruth Pembleton, Patsy McKenna, Marilyn Williams, Lila Shaver and Joanne McKenna.

Among the Back Mountain men who were admitted to membership at the Shrine Ceremonial at Irem Temple Wednesday night were: Stephen Davis, Rodman Derr, Charles Gossart, Clinton Ide, David Lees, Daniel Shaver, Henry Strub, Alva Eggelston, Kenneth Rice, George Turn, Howard Risely, George Bronson and Donald Bogart.

Women of the Rotary entertained their husbands at the annual Christmas Dinner Dance at Irem Country Club last Thursday evening. Mrs. Dan Robinhold was chairman of the affair.
