20 YEARS AGO — 1997

For the second consecutive year, Mrs. Albert’s seventh grade class at Gate of Heaven has raised over $1,000 for school and medical supplies at the missions around the world. The project is entirely managed by the students with no teacher participating. Class members are Melissa Everitt, Danny Engler, Danielle Padavan, Cecilia Williams-Moen, Lauren Davis, Katie Delaney, Christina Puhalla, Kelly Wallick, Lindsay Herron, Colin Donnelly, Monica Latosek, Nick Joseph, Mike Smee, Brent Mayernick, Chrissy Carboni, Amanda Cook and Michael Pokorny.

An enrichment program entitled “Whaletales” was recently presented to the student body at Westmoreland Elementary School. The presenter was Stuart Goldman, who provided informative as well as entertaining research information concerning whales and dolphins. The assembly portion included slides taken by Goldman during his participation in whale research around the world. Whale songs, Orca and dolphin vocalizations, music and artifacts were presented during the assembly. Goldman also presented separate workshops to each class throughout the day.

30 YEARS AGO — 1987

Members of the Rollaway Skating Club presented a skating exhibition at the Dallas rink recently. Those performing were Nicole Hall, Lisa Heck, Danny Rogers, Christopher Stager, Rick Huey, Danny May, Michele Wandel, Missy Kopko, Rachel Huey, Rachel Shupp, Kim Barber, Trudy Wandel, Christi Novak and Dwayne Miller.

Three ninth grade Dallas junior high athletes set a precedent this past school year when they earned senior high varsity letters as members of the high school athletic teams. Laura Poynton, Renee Strauser and Jamie Janosky tried out and became members of the girls’ softball team, girls’ field hockey team and high school’s wrestling squad, respectively.

The Nursing Department of Luzerne County Community College recently awarded its first faculty Academic Achievement Award to a deserving graduate of the college’s two-year associate degree nursing program. Debra Ziglin, of Trucksville, was recognized for achieving the highest average in all the nursing course requirements.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

Students of Gate of Heaven School raised over $2,000 in this year’s candy sale. The following students were the winners of the sale and were responsible for 50 per cent of the candy sales. They received cash awards and savings bonds. They are: Paul Perch, John Walsh, William Millham, Joseph Buzitsky, Molly Boyle, Christian Kelly, Rebecca Geffert, Mark Stredny, David Hartzel, John Luke, Timothy Tamanini, April Petroski and Maria Stahovec.

Nancy E. Law, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Law, Dallas, is the recipient of the Back Mountain Jaycees Book Scholarship for the year 1977 as a result of her academic achievement. She plans to continue her education at Bloomsburg State College where she will pursue a degree in speech and audiology.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

Cub Pack 313 of Mount Zion, under leadership of Dick and Joan King, traveled to Philadelphia last Saturday. They visited the Philadelphia Bulletin, the boat show and the zoo, and enjoyed a trip down the River by boat. Attendees included the Kirby family, the Cather family, the Mikolosko family, the Karichner family, the Burgess family, the Sabal family, the Dymond family, the Condekas family, the Glycefer’s the Holmes’ and the Kings.

Brownies of Troop 623, Harveys Lake, held their Mother and Daughter Banquet recently with Flying Up Ceremony. The affair was held at the Brothers Four in Dallas, with Troop Leader, Mrs. Joseph Kaminski in charge and Mrs. Robert Parrish and Mrs. Thomas Coburn assistants. Participating girls were: Kathleen Bortoin, Gwen Salansky, Kim Kaminski, Eileen Connolly, Holly Parrish, Karen Holdsworth and June Parsons.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

Back Mountain children participated in the Parents’ Night program at Central YMCA pool on Tuesday evening, the finale of the 1957 Learn to Swim campaign sponsored by Back Mountain Branch Town and Country YMCA which had an enrollment of more than 200 boys and girls. Throughout a week of classes they were taught fundamentals of swimming and instructed in water safety under supervision of William Alter. Amongst the 200 participants were Richard Cross, Sharon Evans, Jean Evans, Elsie Hislop, Peper Jenkins, William Rowett, Carol Meyers, Scott Shuster, Thomas Purvis, Jane Layaou, Theron Nesbitt, Calvin Tinsley, Susan Wazeter, Robert Wiley, Linda Scholl, Jimmy Knecht, Jeri Jordan, Donald Dennis, Joanne Hadsall and Cheryl Mullen.

Last Saturday night Back Mountain Firemen’s Bowling League held its annual banquet at the Dallas American Legion Hall, Memorial Highway, when guest of honor, Bob Hanson, presented trophies to Jackson Township for the season’s championship. Captain Ed Kropp accepted the award for the team and “Chiz” Lozo, high average. Members of the winning team were Ed Kropp, Fred Fielding, John Liqua, Kenny cooper, “Chiz” Lozo, Jeff Wagner and Tom DeMeo.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

A party was held at the home of William Rozelle of Orange recently in honor of Miss Wanda Rozelle and Miss Glenna Dymond who left Tuesday for the Poconos where they will work for the summer. Games were played and refreshments served. Those present were: Barbara Brace, Estelle George, Anna Matte, Eleanor Elston, Louise Coolbaugh, Arline Rozelle, Glenna Dymond, Barney Miller, Louise Evans, George Evans, Dewy Zarno, Everal Eaton, Raymond Rozelle, Larry Brace, Fuller Dymond, Robert Berlew, Paul Kunkle, Andrew Motte.

Mrs. Sterling Meade entertained members of the Henry M. Laing Fire Company Auxiliary at her home on Park Street Tuesday evening. Plans were made for the chicken dinner to be served at the Borough High School Thursday evening. Present at the meeting were Mrs. Morris Harris, Mrs. Guy Dunham, Mrs. Nelson Shaver, Mrs. Ralph Fitch, Mrs. Thomas Kepner, Mrs. Arthur Newman, Mrs. Harry Carey, Mrs. Elwood McCarty, Mrs. Thomas Kingston, Mrs. Oscar Roth, Mrs. Floyd Chamberlain, Mrs. Marcus Ide, Mrs. Walter Davis, Mrs. Joe Wallo, Mrs. Edwin Nelson, Mrs. Grant Shaner, Mrs. Charles Stookey and the hostess.
