20 YEARS AGO – 1997

At the 1997 JETS/TEAMS Competition held at Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus, Lake-Lehman won second place in the competition. Nine high school teams, grades 10 through 12, participated in the competition. TEAMS, an acronym for Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science, was created by the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) as an interscholastic competition that requires high-order thinking skills in math, science and communication. The local Penn State campus co-sponsors the competition along with the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. Members of the Lake-Lehman team are: Jennifer Klaips, George Frank, Mike Woronko, Andrew Loughney, Joanne White, Dusty Rhodes, Ken Weaver and Mike Casey. Coach for lake-Lehman is Christine Kopcho.

Recently Dallas Middle School students, in Mr. William Roberts’ social studies classes, concluded their study of ancient near eastern cultures by producing projects that reflected the lifestyle of a particular society. The activities included reports on historical figures, maps showing minerals, industry, and major geographic figures; models and drawing which dealt with architecture, clothing, jewelry, transportation and technology of the various cultures studied. Participants included Amanda Donahue, Jonathan Borthwick, Jennifer Kuligowski, Douglas Yeager and Maria Stevens.

30 YEARS AGO – 1987

Five members of the Dallas Senior High School Soccer Team will participate in the first ever Northeastern All Star Cup (NAS Cup) soccer game on May 9 at Wyoming Valley West Stadium. The five Dallas boys who will be among the 22 players that make up the East and West rosters are: Matt Lipo, John Sheehan, Mark Richardson, Joel van den Hoogen and Chris Fetterman.

Den 2 of Pack 241, Lehman United Methodist Church were recently given a tour of the Kingston Township Police Department in Trucksville. The tour was conducted by Officer Walter Davis who took the scouts throughout the office teaching them how a police department functions, including showing them holding cells and how the breathalyzer test works. Scouts participating in the tour were: Joe Blaine, Matt Bullock, Jeffrey Farley, Mike Yoblonski, Johnathan Grutkowski and Jason Krywicki.

40 YEARS AGO – 1977

Troop 281, Dallas, held an Eagle Court of Honor on April 14, in the Dallas United Methodist Church, for Craig C. Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Stone, Dallas. The Court of Honor was preceded by a banquet in Stone’s honor. His Eagle Scout Project was the revitalizing and refurbishment of Rice Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Dallas Borough, as a Bicentennial project. The scout members of Troop 281 aided Craig in his project.

At the April meeting of the Dallas Band Parents Association a discussion was held on the spring concert on March 31 at which time Mark Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward

Johnson, was chosen as the outstanding band member of this year. The “outstanding band member” is picked each year by Lester Lewis, band director, and is unknown to anyone else until the night of the concert.

Vinnie Vespico, 10 year old from Harveys Lake, caught an 18-inch golden palomino at 8:05 a.m. the opening day of trout season. A little later, he pulled in a 16-inch lake trout.

50 YEARS AGO – 1967

Capacity crowds at Lake Lehman Band Concert on both nights of the performance, enjoyed a varied program under the direction of John Miliauskas, who has led his band to victory in a number of band competitions, with 17 high awards over a period of six years. An added thrill Saturday night was the presentation of the John Philip Sousa Band Award to Gene Bertram for his fine performance on the alto sax, and Sheldon Ehret for expert playing of the trumpet.

Earlier this month, a group of Harveys Lake citizens met at the Idetown Fire Hall to discuss the May primary election. It was decided to organize a Women’s Auxiliary for Borough Manager Government to aid the group of workers interested in making Harveys Lake one of the most progressive and modern communities in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Mrs. James McCaffrey was elected chairman of the new organization and Mrs. Theresa Clark, secretary-treasurer.

60 YEARS AGO – 1957

Junior Class of Lake-Noxen High School will present “Rest Assured,” a comedy in three acts in the auditorium tonight at 8. John Zaleskas is director. Members of the cast: James Scouten, Peggy Coole, Nancy Bean, Sandra Morris, Thelma Dougal, Roger Race, Robert McGovern, Grayce Harvey, Keith Evans, Connie Smith, Walter Hennebaul, Grace Grey, Jack Williams, Charles Newell and David White.

Chemistry pupils of Martha Russ Smith, teacher at Lake Noxen High School, recently enjoyed a field trip to the Dorrance Colliery and Stegmaier Brewing Company. Attending were Nancy Bean, Mike Bielecki, Harold Blizzard, Peggy Colle, Lois Del Kanic, Thelma Dougal, Sandy Engelman, Keith Evans, Walter Hennebaul, James Ide, Frank Jones, John Lyons, Bob McGovern, Mary McHose, Charles Newell, Andy Oney, Roger Race, Jack Rauch, Jim Scouten, Connie Smith, Tom Swire, Bob Turner, David White and Jack Williams.

70 YEARS AGO – 1947

Myra Reese, Pioneer Avenue, was the lucky little girl who won the fluffy, white rabbit with huge pink eyes at the children’s story hour last Saturday morning at Memorial Library. In spite of the stormy weather, forty-four youngsters were on hand to hear Janet Smith read a very interesting story, enjoy the antics of the live Easter rabbit and eat chocolate Easter eggs, the gift of Sheldon Evans, Shavertown druggist.

The Junior Class of Dallas Township High School will present a three-act comedy entitled, “Spring Fever,” by Glenn Hughes, in the high school auditorium Friday. Members of the cast are: Nancy Hessler, Betty Vavrek, Phyllis Kunkle, Wilma Hess, Charlotte Boston, Peggy Martin, Glenn Howell, Joe Tondora, Robert Henney, Arthur Roberts, Thomas Bunney, Torrance Gensel and Harriet Prater.

James Brownlee, chairman of the Agriculture Committee of Wilkes-Barre Kiwanis Club, organized a girls’ and boys’ Poultry and Agriculture 4-H Club at Carverton last week. Election of officers was as follows: President, Calvin Crane; Vice President, Carl Henning; Secretary, Catherine Vann; Treasurer, Lorraine Casterline; Game Leader, Wesley Kintz. The club has 15 to 20 members.
