Locals received residency assignments

SCRANTON — Three local Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students learned their residency placements during the National Resident Matching Program’s “Match Day.”

“Match Day” is an event where all fourth-year medical doctor students around the country simultaneously open their envelopes to learn where they will spend the next three to seven years training in specialties. Residencies typically begin July 1.

• Brittany Austin, of Harveys Lake, was matched to Medical University of South Carolina for Obstetrics-Gynecology

• Dominic Jose, of Shavertown , was matched to University of Virginia for Anesthesiology

• Daniel Loughran, of Dallas, was matched to Arnot Ogden Medical Center in New York for Emergency Medicine

Zavada honored for military service

HARRISBURG — First Lady Frances Wolf and Major General Anthony Carrelli, Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General, recently joined the Pennsylvania Commission for Women to host the third annual Female Veterans Day Ceremony in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The event honored Harveys Lake resident Adelle Zavada as well as 15 other women from across the state for their military service.

U.S. Air Force Colonel Zavada served a 30-year career as an aircraft maintenance and logistics officer. She served in various leadership positions in both the active and reserve components. As a Reservist, she was mobilized after the September 11 attacks to lead the Air Force Combat Support Center at the Pentagon.

Zavada is a graduate of Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and Air War College, all located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama.

She is also a distinguished graduate from the Air Force Institute of Technology, where she earned a master degree in logistics management. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, a Pharmacy degree from Temple University, and a Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law.

Zavada practiced law in the public interest sector over the past 12 years. She resides with her husband Sam.

Three inducted into honor society

SCRANTON — Back Mountain residents among the 77 University of Scranton students inducted into Omega Beta Sigma, the women’s business honor society, are Katie Conrad, of Dallas; Molly Hampsey, of Tunkhannock; Alissa Zamber, of Tunkhannock.
