HARVEYS LAKE — The borough police department will receive a $6,000 grant to purchase six portable radios for law enforcement officers.

The funding is part of $264,300 in grants awarded through Williams’ Community Grant program. The program awards grants in $10,000 increments to eligible organizations in communities where the Atlantic Sunrise pipeline project is constructed.

“We are very pleased to land this grant,” said Harveys Lake Borough Police Chief Charles Musial. “We would not have been able to purchase them without the grant.”

The six digital portable radios are estimated to cost $1,000 each, and include associated equipment such as holders, Musial said.

The last time the law enforcement agency purchased portable radios was about nine years ago.

The radios will be programmable to match the Luzerne County 911 system and provide a safety measure for officers, he added.

Harveys Lake Borough Police Department is one of three agencies in Luzerne County to receive a Williams grant. WVIA Public Media in Pittston received $4,000 to support educational programming and Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre was awarded $10,000 for its Women Empowered by Science program, according to a news release.

Williams started the Community Grant program in 2015 and has awarded over $2.2 million to 309 organizations throughout the Atlantic Sunrise project region, according to the news release.

This spring’s grant allotment was dispersed to 41 organizations in the following categories: emergency response, $107,000; education, $64,500; recreation or community enhancement project, $92,800; totaling $264,300.

Organizations can apply for the next round of grant at www.atlanticsunriseexpansion.com/community/grant-program. Applications must be received by Sept. 1.
