DALLAS TWP. — Ninety first-grade students at Wycallis Elementary School presented a patriotic show May 25.

Singing “Let’s Make Music America,” the red, white and blue-clad children greeted family members in the school’s gymnasium.

The four first-grade classes performed a show at 10:30 a.m. for their peers and a second production at 1:30 p.m. for family members, said Wycallis Elementary School music teacher Deborah Pike.

“The first-grade patriotic concert is held annually,” Pike wrote in an email. “I feel it is extremely important for our children to learn these songs at an early age so that they can begin to understand the importance of patriotism and to honor the men and women who have fought and died for our freedoms.”

The students held small American flags and sang patriotic songs such as “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” “Three Cheers for the Red White and Blue,”America” and “America the Beautiful.”

Thirty aspiring musicians took turns playing percussion instruments during the students’ rendition of “Yankee Doodle.”
