Daddow-Isaacs Dallas American Legion Post 672 is sponsoring their annual Essay Contest. This year’s topic is “What More Should America Do To Protect Her Borders?”

Any student in grades 9-12 in a public, parochial or private, or home schooled in the Back Mountain, is eligible to participate. All essays must be no less than 500 words or no more than 1,000 words. The specific rules for submitting an Essay can be garnered at school or calling the chairman, Clarence J. Michael, at 570-675-0488. Essays will be due no later than Jan. 31, 2016. Monies will be awarded on a local, district, and state level.

The Department of Pennsylvania First Place Winner will be awarded a $3,500 scholarship, a plaque, and a trip to the American Legion Convention in July to read the winning essay to the assembled delegates. The second place winner will receive a $3,000 scholarship, and the third place winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Since the inception of the Department of Pennsylvania state Essay Contest in 1935, the American Legion has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships. With the increasing costs of a college education this is an excellent way to earn some scholarship money.

A national Oratorical Contest is also sponsored by Post 672.
