20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Rebecca Hoover, who recently completed her junior year at Lycoming College, was invited to present her Psychology experiment titled “Academic Achievement: A Study of Gender and Seating Position in the College Classroom” at the Eastern Colleges Science Conference. The conference was held at Sacred heart University in Fairfield, CT. Her presentation, in a poster board forum, received first place. She is the daughter of Russ and Dee Dee Hoover.

Christopher Ruth announces his band, the Screamin’ Jimmies, has released its first compact disc. Ruth is the son of Harold and Joan Ruth of Park Street in Dallas and is a 1991 graduate of Dallas High School. The CD is entitled “Time and Time Again” and is available at all Gallery of Sound stores.

Cub Scouts from Den 3, Pack 232, visited the office of The Dallas Post recently for one of their meetings. The scouts learned how the newspaper is produced each week, the different types of work people do at a newspaper and how new technology is used. Participating scouts were: Julian Bartorillo, John Frederick, Thomas McGrath, Michael Supczenski and Kevin Buckman.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

If you’re thinking of investing in the stock market, you might want to talk to some of the students at the Dallas and Westmoreland Elementary Schools. Fifth grade students in the gifted program at Dallas Elementary placed first out of 120 schools in a 10-week stock market game sponsored by Widener University of Philadelphia. The Westmoreland School team came in fifth in the same contest. Members of the Dallas Elementary winning team are Jared Dukas, Conner Ennis, Lisa Lynch, Zack Welch and Sarah Wysocki.

Kindergarten students from The Playschool, Dallas, recently visited residents at the Meadows Nursing Center, Dallas, to present a Spring Music Program. A mum plant was also donated by the students for each dining room. Participating students included Matthew Eyet, Kirby Jo Richards, Clair Gammage, Seth Yeager and Laura Ann Loeffler.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Couples Club of Shavertown United Methodist Church will sponsor an ABC sale Monday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the social rooms of the church. There will be craft tables, garage sale tables, plant tables, baked goods, toys, accessories, furniture and small appliances. Sorting the items last week were Marsha Paczewski, general chairman; Sue Ehst, co-chairman; Mary DeLong, collectibles; Arline Klinger, baked goods; Beverly Bunney, toys; Irma Jacobs, plants; Barbara Stecher, furniture; Doris Parsons, jewelry; Elain Bearley, accessories; Alice Moye, small appliances; and Alice Niskey, crafts.

Members of the Back Mountain Kiwanis Club met on Saturday to clean up and prepare the Lehman Horse Show grounds for the club’s 2nd Annual Rodeo to be held May 19 and 20 on the grounds located in Route 118, Lehman. Participating in the cleanup were Joe McDonald, Jim Snyder, Gus Faerber, Larry McDonald and Art “Butch” Parks.

Sr. M. Leonita Mulligan, RSM, principal of Gate of Heaven School, announced the winners in the school’s Science Fair. Sixth grade prize winners and their science project were: Paul Hartzel, “What is a Magnet,” 1st prize; John Spencer, “What is the Rate of Growth in a Flowering Plant: 2nd prize; Paul Dietl, “Do plants Need Proper Amounts of Sunlight and Water to Survive,” 3rd prize; and Richard Bernick, “What is the Life Cycle of Plants,” honorable mention.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

While fellow volunteers cheered, three veteran officials were honored recently for their outstanding service over the years as officers of Trucksville Fire Company. Plaques were presented denoting the work done by each man by the President William Long to William Moss, Relief Fund Treasurer, Vought Long, Fire Chief for 20 years, and Jacob Harrison who served as Vice President and President over two decades. Wayne Long, chairman of the testimonial dinner held at the Castle Inn, presented corsages to the wives of those honored.

Boy Scouts of Troop 231 recently dug a drainage trench – and later resowed the area with grass seed – around a portion of the Back Mountain Community Library. Part of a community project, the ditch will divert water run-off from entering the basement. Scouts participating were Francis Barry, Joe Hazeltine, Dave Dieloff, Bill Dieloff, Jess McDonald, Kevin McGee, Bob Casterbury, Lance Golden, Mark Sherwood and Greg Sherwood.

Elected recently as May Queen at Gettysburg College was Miss Beverly Eck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eck, Lehigh Street, Shavertown. With her father as escort during the ceremonies, Miss Eck’s coronation highlighted both the Parents Weekend held at the college and her own active college career.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Dallas Township Amateur Night will offer twenty-three acts, and will last for two hours, judging by rehearsals. As each entrant is letter perfect in his part, rehearsals are only to make sure that the show hangs together properly. Try-outs were held last week under the supervision of Alfred Camp, Ted Raub and Clayton Evans. Friday is the big night.

Lady Toby Rebekah Lodge 514 of Trucksville will present a Children’s Fashion Show and Tea in the Little White Church on the Hill, Trucksville Wednesday at 8. Dorothy Williams and Wilma Gordon are co-chairmen. The children’s fashions will be through the courtesy of Humphrey’s Kiddie Shop, Shavertown Shopping Center. Mrs. Walter Phillips will be the narrator.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Student body of Lehman Schools has selected five girls one of whom will be queen and the others her attendants at the annual May Day Festival on Thursday, May 19. James Kern, Senior Class president, will crown one of the following girls as Queen: Leona Lord, Joan Coolbaugh, Elsie Jean Ide, Anna Ide or Joyce Adams.

Mother and Daughter Banquet, sponsored by Carverton Methodist Church W.S.C.S. and held on Wednesday evening, was well attended. Mrs. Emma Bodle, oldest mother present, and Mrs. Richard Culver, youngest mother, received gifts. Mrs. Mildred Pomeroy, Orange, spoke on her recent trip to Mexico and displayed numerous articles she had brought back from this southern country.
