20 YEARS AGO — 1999

Lehman-Jackson Elementary students were treated to a “Book’n with Ronald” program as part of the PTA’s second free RIF book distribution of the year. Thanks to McDonald’s in Shavertown and owners Albert and Carol Mueller, the students and teachers enjoyed magic tricks, reading games and quizzes, all designed to help encourage students to want to read. Enjoying the fun are Kassandra Shedlowski, Tyler Barrall, Melissa Attanasio, Molly Murphy, Jesse Jayne, MacKenzie Brown, Kayla Fine, Vincent Johnstone, Peter Kwastavich, Jessie Tunis, Stephanie Ciehoski, William Wilson, Eric Bella, Brian Poepperling, Johnna Hudak, Renee Vrhel, Arthur Lee, Catherine Sullivan, Ryan May, Jared Pilger and Chris Dunsmuir.

The Lake Silkworth Area Lions recently honored Kathleen Tripp as the Student of the Second Quarter form Lake-Lehman High School. Kathleen and her mother, Ann, Harvey Lake, were guests of the Lions at a dinner meeting held at the red Rooster Restaurant, Pikes Creek. Ms. Tripp was presented with a monetary gift and a certificate in recognition of outstanding school and community achievement.

It’s never too late to try something new. Just ask Kirby Richards. This Dallas High School sophomore was not fazed by the popular image of preadolescent ice skaters, practicing their childhoods away in their quest for an Olympic medal. Supported by her parents and coach, she has already begun her climb in the ice skating community, despite having only begun skating 11 months ago. Kirby won two silver medals at the Keystone Games in Mechanicsburg in February. As a result, she has been invited to the State Games OF America, in St. Louis, in August.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Members of the Developmental Bowling League ended their 10-week season last week with a pizza party at The Pizza Hut where they were awarded trophies for their season’s competition. Sponsored by the Deutsch Institute for Disabled Individuals, members of College Misericordia served as volunteers for the bowling league which was designed for people with special needs. Some of the members of the bowling league are Josh Roland, Scott Sarley, Shelley Lowery, Amy Spencer and Cory Gwilliam. Members of the Circle K Club who volunteered for the program include Dyann Tiasicky, Rebecca Farber, Debbie McGivern and Chris Beilbelheimmer.

Stuart Goldman, former teacher, who now studies all varieties of whales, spoke to students at Dallas Elementary School last week, telling them tales about whales and doing a film presentation. Second grade students who were seen examining a large whale bone included Kathryn Palmatier, Jonathan Saba, Laura Gammage, Richie Harris, Holly Shiber, Frank Perkoskie and Michelle Lawler.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Members of Dallas Federated Junior Woman’s Club visited Dallas Junior High School, Tuesday afternoon, and awarded prizes to the winners of the art contest sponsored by the club.

Winners recognized by the club were Michael Chismer, 7th grade, Donna Cupinski, 8th grade; Wendy Morgan, 9th grade, all first place winners; Susan Niskey, 7th grade, second; Kristi Boudreaux, 7th grade, third; Sean Havey, 8th grade, second; Scott Calkins, 8th grade, third; and Cindy Bauer, 9th grade, second. The awards were presented by Mrs. Jack Barbose, president, and Mrs. Nicholas Riggi, art contest chairman.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that Holly Peters, a student at Dallas Senior High School, has been selected to receive a scholarship in the 1979nProctor & Gamble Fund Scholarship Program. Holly is the daughter of Mrs. Jack Hiller of Shavertown and David Peters of Tunkhannock. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Drama Club.

“Funny Girl,” a Ray Stark Broadway musical hit, will be presented by the Lake-Lehman High School chorus on Friday and Saturday in the high school auditorium. Directed by Miss Maureen Purcell, the cast of 19 includes 10 who have appeared in former musical productions at Lake-Lehman. A full chorus, directed by Miss Jane Morris, and an orchestra under the direction of Mr. Jonathan Pineno are also included in the production. Choreography is being directed by Mrs. Debbie Maskalis.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

For the second year in a row, William Guyette, of Guyette Communications, Shavertown, received recognition for outstanding marketing in the Wilkes-Barre – Scranton area. The international award was presented to Mr. Guyette by L.K. Kendall, district manager of Dukane Corp., Washington, D.C., at a dinner held at Brothers 4, Dallas. The award is a singular honor in that of the 483 world-wide distributors of Dukane Communications equipment, only 14 awards are given.

Eight Dallas Senior High School students, who submitted original creative writings to a national publisher, have been notified that their manuscripts have been accepted for publication this spring. Deborah Fader, junior class, had a poem published in the Annual Anthology of High School Poetry. Five sophomores will have their essays included in a book entitled Young America Speaks. They are Sandy Barakat, Linda Doughton, Jerry McDonald, Phillip Scott and Lindsay Sherwood. Two other poets, Valerie Edwards and Gail Morris, both sophomores, will have their poems include dint he book Young America Sings.

Several members of the junior and senior classes at Dallas Senior High School recently participated in tests given at local colleges. Those taking the French test at King’s College were Beth Sheehan, Diane Thier and Vera Balshaw. Vera placed second in the contest. Those participating in the math test at Wilkes College were Gwen Kloeber, Charles LeBerge, Jim Pickert, Richard Shelden, Jeff Eyet, Gary Belles and Vince Roman.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

A capacity crowd has made reservations to honor Senator Andrew J. Sordoni Saturday evening at Irem Temple Country Club. Atty. James Brown, president of Back Mountain Protective Association, announced that indications are that the dinner will be the largest ever sponsored by the association. Robert Laux, chairman and Mrs. Elizabeth Wallo, co-chairman announce the following entertainment: Mrs. Sylvia Schooley, vocal selections, accompanied by Mrs. Robert W. Laux and the Misericordia String Ensemble. Judge Harold Flannery will be the speaker and Atty. Joseph E. O’Donnell, well known humorist, will be toastmaster.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Sarah E. Ferguson of Shavertown, well known composer, wrote both lyrics and music for “Mother Dear” which will be sung by Miss Gloria McNally at the Mother’s Day service in Emmanuel Baptist Church of Scranton on Sunday. Miss Ferguson also composed the music for “Should I Go First” which will be sung by Christopher Lynch at the spring concert given by Concordia in Irem Temple this weekend.

Harry Trebilcox, Kingston Township High School Junior, won a superior rating as pianist at the annual forensic contest held at Pottstown Friday morning. To be eligible for the Pottstown contest, he first had to be rated superior in the County and in the N.E. Pennsylvania Contests.
