20 YEARS AGO — 1999

The Gate of Heaven 6th Grade Girls Basketball Team recently captured the championship of the 1998-1999 East-West catholic 5th and 6th Grade League. The team swept through the regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. In the post season tournament, they went 3-0, defeating Regis Academy in the championship game. Team members are: Sarah Mentis, Devin Casey, Kim Durr, Liza Clements, Lauren Collini, Lauren Adamchak, Amber Verazin, Kristen Evans, Janelle Zabresky, Katie Whalen, Sandy Krogulski, Joanna Smith, Caroline Byron and Janelle Peters. The team is coached by Mary Durr, Ken Krogulski and Dave Whalen.

Kingston Township Recreation recently held its annual Basketball Shootout. Boys and girls, along with their parents, enjoyed an evening competition, fun and prizes. The top three finishers in the Free Throw Shooting category were: (7 & 8) Drew Morgantini, Mark Covert, Nicholas Latosik; (9 & 10) Doug Harding, Eric Tucker, Drew Morgantini; (11 & 12) Ryan Marascio, Joe Colangelo, Matthew Shiskowski; (13 & 14) Tim Kerestes, Stephen Luksh, Bobby Zaruta; and (15 & 16) Dan Mulhern, Matt Rice, Jeff Zaruta.

Bishop O’Reilly High School, Kingston, will present its annual spring concert on Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. The concert will feature presentations from a full glee club, a chamber choir and a folk group. Back Mountain students participating in the concert are: Maryagnes Lupien, Kelly Mallick, Sabrina DeFalco, Jessica Giunta, Ryan Williams, Tim Flanagan and John Mitchell.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Children of Trinity Nursery School presented two books to the Back Mountain Memorial Library recently for the Children’s Library. Presenting the books to Mrs. M. Rudolph, Children’s Librarian, were Joanna Oliver, Stephen Luksh, Kristen Allardyce and Joshua Maye. The books are Dumouse Monsters and Sunlight.

The newspaper staff of the Dallas Middle School recently went on a field trip to the Times Leaders newspaper in Wilkes-Barre. The newspaper’s education director, Ms. Carol Barrone, took the students on a tour of the publishing plant and spoke on the importance of a computer in outing out a daily newspaper. Students who made the field trip were: Heather Mead, Marlene Matosky, Carlene Tyrell, Julie Miers, Shannon McDonald, Kristin Gurdin, Karin Wartella, Emily Miers, Heather Brody, Amy Merrill, Nina Mathers and Karistin Kosakowski. The students were accompanied by advisors Catherine and John Wega.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Team C of the sixth grade reading class and the gifted children of Dallas Intermediate School recently visited the King Tut exhibit at Shadowbrook which was presented by Mr. and Mrs. Rolf Langner. Participants included John Artman, Mark Hines, Steve Wilson, Cheryl Harding, Leslie Myers, Sarah Rothschild, Ricky Clemow, Kelly Saba, Ruth Gavazzi, Mia Argento, John Scott, Eric Supey, Bobby Oliver and Karen Wells.

Mrs. Marge Garinger of Harveys Lake is in Europe on a 14-game 19-day Olympic Qualifying Tour of Europe with the United States Field Hockey team. Marge was selected to join the top 16 women field hockey players in the United States as manager of the team for the crucial series of competition. Garinger, who referees basketball, hockey, lacrosse, and occasionally softball, is the mother of four children, Tracy, Wendy and Amy, all members of Lake-Lehman’s varsity field hockey team; and Robert, 14. Marge has an extensive background in field hockey and following graduation from college, was a member of the USA squad.

The lucky winners of prizes awarded by the Dallas Township office of the Wyoming National Bank during its month-long opening festivities were Craig Phillips, Dallas, winner of the stereo; Joan Gdosky, Oak Hill, and Sister Mary Edith, College Misericordia, winners of the clock radios; Agnes Harned, Shickshinny, winner of the radio; Alice Dollard, Dallas, winner of the 25” Zenith color TV.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

The Woman’s Association of Trinity United Presbyterian Church has issued invitations to all women’s organizations of Back Mountain area churches to attend its sixth annual spring tea to be held May 27 at 1 p.m. at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church. Woman’s Association president Mrs. Fred V. Swanson has appointed Mrs. Donald M. Johnson Jr. chairman of the event. Assisting Mrs. Johnson are: Mrs. Ellwood Cook, Mrs. Louise Rutherford, Mrs. Mitchell Jenkins, Mrs. J. Gray Mattern, Mrs. Bobbie Reynolds, Mrs. Larry Stemm, Mrs. Walter Davidson, Mrs. Fred Swanson and Mrs. Andrew Pillarella.

Judy Reese of Westmoreland Elementary School was awarded first prize in the recent poster contest sponsored by the Luzerne County Dental Auxiliary. Third place was received by Ralph Frost III, Dallas Elementary School. George Craig, Dallas Elementary School, was given honorable mention. Judy’s poster will be entered in the statewide contest.

Bright yellow daffodils and yellow candles decorated the tea table and heralded the arrival of spring at the season’s first meeting of the Back Mountain Memorial Library Book Club Monday afternoon. Miss Adelia Stevens, flower and garden expert, addressed the club and showed slides of various flowers and natural life which abounds in the Southwestern part of America. Members present at the meeting included Mrs. Joseph Beckhan, Mrs. James Malkames, Mrs. Stewart Ferguson, Mrs. A.D. Hutchison, Mrs. W.A. Myers, Mrs. Fred B. Howell, Mrs. Charles S. Frantz, Mrs. James I. Alexander, Mrs. Ben H. Edwards, Mrs. Homer B. Moyer, Mrs. Lyman Lull, Mrs. J. MacFarland, Mrs. Stanley B. Davies, Mrs. Dana Crump and Mrs. Fred Kolls.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Mrs. J.C. Fleming’s third grade at Dallas Borough School carried out the theme of the Four Seasons, not only in a mural for the recent art and work display, but in poems. Nancy Crispell started with spring. Carrying out the theme to summer and vacation time was Marguerite Nafus. Shirley Brown took autumn for her theme, and Michael O’Malia ended the seasons with winter.

The decorating committee for Junior Woman’s Club Spring Frolic are laying plans for the traditional “Blue-Bird” theme, which will be woven into the background for the gay seasonal dance May 9 at Irem Temple Country Club. Committee members are: Mrs. Robert Brown, Mrs. Edwin Delaney, Mrs. William Morgan, Mrs. Bernard Rogers, Mrs. Hugh Carr, Jr., Mrs. John Blase, Mrs. Bud Nelson and Mrs. Ted Hartman.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

David Kunkle, son of Mr. and Mrs. Warden Kunkle will be elevated to Eagle Scout Sunday morning at Dallas Methodist Church. Davis is an honor student at Dallas Borough School where he is a member of the sophomore class. He became involved in Boy Scouting as a Tenderfoot in March 1945.

Plans have been completed for a reading, tea and bake sale to be held by Dallas Kiwanis Woman’s Club in Shavertown Methodist Church at 8 o’clock. Mrs. Howard Murphy will read “Pioneer Preacher,” a humorous tale of the early twentieth century. Mrs. Kenneth Rice is general chairman of the affair.
