20 YEARS AGO — 1999

After braving months of intensive skin grafting and treatment for burns endured during a house fire last March, Rikki Sue Shotwell is doing “really well,” said her grandmother, Debbie Mitchell. Rikki Sue celebrated her sixth birthday last week with her family and is now attending kindergarten at Dallas Elementary.

Amy Pack, eighth grade, was named the Dallas Middle School volunteer of the year in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program recently. In addition, Stephanie Yeung, eighth grade, received a Certificate of Merit for her volunteer community service. Pack is being recognized for her volunteer work as a candy striper at Meadows Nursing Home. Yeung is a candy striper at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital.

The Dallas High School Marching Band competed in the Tournament of Bands competition at Mount Pocono High School in November, placing second in Division I competition with a score of 90.15 and receiving special recognition for best percussion in the division. Members of the percussion group are Brian Carlson, Rob Burns, Matt Kelly, Pat Besecker, Kevin Covert, Drum Major; Mike Miller, Brian Miller and Gene Koshinski.

30 YEARS AGO — 1989

Brownie Troop 651, Lehman, recently celebrated the holiday season by entertaining the staff and patients at Nesbitt Memorial Hospital’s pediatric ward with Christmas Carols. Afterwards, they themselves were entertained at a Christmas party at the home of assistant leader, Cindy Kuhns. Troop members are Jaime Kuhns, Jennifer McCoog, Elizabeth Lorah, Jennifer Casey, Rachel Harrison, Tabitha Beck, Midi Koprowksi and Laura Jones.

The United Methodist Women of the Trucksville United Church held installation of officers on January 8 at the 11 a.m. Worship Service. The installation was conducted by Barbara Saxe, the former president of the Wyoming Valley Conference United Methodist Women. The new officers for 1989 are as follows: President, Isabel Kreidler; Vice-President, Barbara Glowach, Recording Secretary, Nancy Dukes and treasurer, Helen Gaylord.

40 YEARS AGO — 1979

Winners of Mark II’s Trim-A-Tree Contest gathered at the Dallas restaurant Christmas Eve to receive their $10 gift certificates. Winners included: Chrissy Casterline, Mary Herbert, Hugh Mundy, Christine Shalata, Kristen Dougherty, Joanne Zuba, Maura Mundy, Annette Sitar and Rona Lee Visneski.

Members of the award-winning Lake-Lehman High School Band who have been chosen to represent their high school and community in this year’s Pennsylvania All-State Band are: Dan Long, first coronet; June Yankowski, flute and Susan Havrilla, alto-saxophone. The select members of this 132-piece band will represent the state at the annual Pennsylvania Music Educators Conferece.

50 YEARS AGO — 1969

Dallas Jr. Girl Scout Troop 640 toured the Dallas Library on Friday. Mrs. Martin Davern and Mrs. Frances Rinehart explained to the girls all the facilities available. At the conclusion of the tour, each girl was given an assignment using the card file to find a certain book under their category and a magazine in which the subject appeared. Those attending were: Diane Anthony, Cathy Barry, Lynn Cutter, Janice Demmy, Colleen Gries, Doreen Grieves, Diane Hersh, Nancy Law, Cindy Lefko, Cathy Mission, Susan Tenley and Wendy Weir.

One Lake-Lehman grappler, Ron Sorber at 133 pounds, captured a title at the Williamsport Wrestling Invitational Tournament during the holidays. In the final session, Ron decisioned Jeff Walk of Montoursville, 9-7.

60 YEARS AGO — 1959

Nine Cub Scouts, one Den Chief, two den-mothers, and two mothers-at-large visited the Dallas Post from Prince of Peace Cub Pack 200 Wednesday afternoon. Cubs toured the plant, following a piece of typewritten copy from the linotype machine to the composing stone where type is fastened into forms to make up a part of the page of a newspaper, and downstairs to the press room where the paper is printed every Thursday evening for mailing on Friday morning. From Den 1: Scott Fry, Harry Cooper, John Gager, David Finn, Harold Federici, den chief Bill Cooper, den mother Mrs. William G. Cooper, and mother Mrs. Franklin Gager. From Den II: John Phillips, Russell Williams, Jimmie Smith, Gary Williams, den mother Mrs. Russell Williams and mother Mrs. Michaelena Phillips.

The Harry Hunter children of Demunds Road are keeping up their reputation for snapping bones this winter. Two days before Christmas it was year-old James Dale, not yet able to walk, who took a twisting header on the floor of the living room and broke his right arm; the day after Christmas it was Pamela, eleven, who broke an ankle on the skating pond near her home. In the past, she has had a broken arm and two broken ribs. Brother Harry, nine, has had three broken arms. Mrs. Hunter is holding her fingers crossed, waiting for spring to come.

70 YEARS AGO — 1949

Kingston Township football squad, coaches, managers and faculty were honored guests of Dallas Rotary Club last night at Irem Temple where they received the first annual golden football shoe award for the outstanding football team of the Back Mountain region. Members of the football squad on hand were: Joseph Adams, Glenn Carey, Bruce Cleasby, John Connors, Samuel Joseph, Bruce Griffiths, Richard Handley, Wayne Harrison, Albert Hawk, Russell Hons, Dean Johnson, Richard Lewis, William Long, Sheldon MacAvoy, James Martin, William Oney, Wayne Terrin, James Terry, John Sherin, Robert Roberts and Bernard Joseph Youngblood.

On January 4th, Jack and Doc Miller completed what may be the first successful television reception in the Back Mountain area. Since January 4th they have been receiving at least one station every night, and many nights they have been receiving on channels 3-4-6-7, which is very unusual in this area.
