20 YEARS AGO — 1998

Bob Horlacher Memorial Little League minor girls’ team recently completed an undefeated season with an 11-0 record. Members of the team include Jacquelyn Brace, Amanda Wooditch, Jacqueline Chapin, Denise Nerozzi, Megan McDonald, Molly Kalish, Crystal Hettes, Noel Sidorek, Heather McDonald, April Freeman, Katie Goode, Amanda Szczucki, Marissa Patton and Adrienne Pugh.

Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post 672 of Dallas, recently presented their American Legion Award to the outstanding eighth grade boy and girl from Dallas Middle School. Students were evaluated in the criteria of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. Award winners this year are Laura Vodzak, Dallas, and Herbert Bressler, Wyoming.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Beth Hartshorne, age 8, recently competed in the Precision Unlimited Dance Competition at Gus Genetti’s. Beth’s group placed first in the Group Novelty Tap division for their tap routine, “Dancing on a Dime.” Beth is the daughter of Rev. Don and Sharon Hartshorne of Orange. She will be a third grade student at Dallas Elementary School this fall.

College Misericordia’s Dr. Kathleen Nolan designed a camp for children with special needs which focused on the creative arts. The camp’s main event, a musical variety show, gave campers an opportunity to sing, dance, play instruments and even lip sync. Staff members at the camp included Ann Norton, head teacher; Kelly Kennedy, teacher assistant; Patricia Dworak, teacher assistant; Karen Pugh, teacher assistant; and Carmela Maccarone, teacher.

The Kingston Township Board of Supervisors, at their regular monthly meeting, honored the Dallas Senior High School Girls Softball Team for capturing the District II, P.I.A.A. Championship. In a special proclamation presented to Dallas Area Superintendent of Schools, Gerald Wycallis, the Board of Supervisors noted the impressive season and the exceptional abilities of the coaching staff comprised of Head Coach Jay Pope along with Assistant Coaches Yvonne Mould and Judy Harvey.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

Winners of the Homerun Derby at Harveys Lake last Saturday were Mike Davidson, two Phillies tickets winner; Ricky Titus, first, Phillies plaque winner; Jason Cadwalader, second, Phillies plaque winner; and Jimmy Martin, third, Phillies plaque winner.

John Sabol, Windsor Drive, Dallas, was the winner of a trip for two to Las Vegas awarded on Fan Appreciation Night at a Wilkes-Barre race track.

Children and adults participating in the programs at the Dallas Borough Recreation Center this summer have enjoyed a series of activities. Most of these activities have been planned and carried out by the Center’s director, Jay Pope, and the four college students working with him, including Donna Shaffer, Cindy Lefko, Laurie Hiller and Wayne Good.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

Miss Barbara Daubert of Spring Street, Shavertown, will receive her Majority at a Majority Service at Grand Assembly in University Park next Friday. A Majority in the Order or Rainbow for Girls is awarded a girl when she reaches the age of twenty. She then becomes a Life Member. Barbara is a graduate of Dallas Senior High School.

Two area residents were among graduates at College Misericordia’s summer commencement last week. They are Mrs. Patricia A. Bronson, Dallas; and Mrs. Barbara Teresa Balut, New Goss Manor.

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

George Dombek, former head coach at Wyalusing Valley High School, will be the new coach of wrestling this year in Dallas Area Schools. He will also act as assistant coach of football along with Coach Anthony Roan and assistant coach Thomas Carr. Mr. Dombek will teach English.

A seven-year old boy on Norton Avenue was the first Dallas resident to fill his coin card for support of the Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire Company – and with his very own eight quarters. Coin cards, says Joe Peterson, were distributed on Norton Avenue Monday afternoon. Craig Churry, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Churry, appeared bright and early Tuesday morning at the Henry Peterson home with his coin card. Joe was impressed.

Norti Berti, Burgess of Dallas Borough, died suddenly Thursday morning at his home on Franklin Street, following a heart attack. He would have been forty-five on Sunday. He had been in apparently good health until a few hours before his death. His death is not only a profound shock to his family, but to the whole Back Mountain Country where he was known by practically every man, woman and child.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

Janet Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Wright of Lehman, has returned from Kansas City, Mo. where she was one of thirty-four girls from Pennsylvania and the only girl from Luzerne County to attend the National F.H.A. Convention. Twenty-five thousand girls from all states in the Union as well as from Hawaii and Puerto Rico were present.

Miss Margaret Lukasavage, who was graduated from Misericordia in the Home Economics course last June, has been engaged by Lake Township School Board to teach Vocational Home Economics. Miss Lukasavage is a former student of Lake Township School and a graduate of the Home Economics Course at Lehman. She served as a substitute teacher for three weeks at the beginning of the 1947-1948 term and also spent six weeks full time practice teaching in Lake schools.
