20 YEARS AGO — 1998

Brownie Troop #650, Dallas, recently completed their yearly service project. The troop made up three baskets to be given to a local shelter that will benefit displaced children. Troop members are: Jackie O’Brien, Molly Gilligan, Katie Levandoski, Kenslie Kerestes, Jackie Lowe, Megan Youells, Lauren Yurko, Katie Gilligan, Becky Travis, Nicole Brezinski, Alyssa Miller, Sarah Marinacci, Nicole Madden, Amanda Musto and Erica Slocum.

College Misericordia softball coach Charlotte Slocum was presented with a plaque recently from the National Fastpitch Coach’s Association in recognition of her 300th career victory. Now in her 18th season at Misericordia, Slocum reached the milestone last year and is 12th among active Division III coaches with a career winning percentage of .683.

Dallas High School will present “Nicholas Nickleby” adapted by Tim Kelly from the novel by Charles Dickens, this Friday and Saturday in the high school auditorium. Student actors include Rob Fletcher, Amy Samuels, Peter Redmond, Kate Weiss, Tim Herbert, Jeanette Humphrey, Jason Vodzak, Emily Mallick, Michelle Jayne, Jennifer Moser and many more.

30 YEARS AGO — 1988

Dallas Junior High School Student Council presented a check recently to Janie Griffin, Special Olympics Manager, to help support the Special Olympics events. The Student Council members decided to use funds raised from their annual sale of lollipops to aid the Special Olympics and the Women’s Resource Center. Student Council members involved in the check presentation are: Lisa Vozniak, Erin Johnson, Alison Labbate, Thanh Hunyh and Tracy Stahl.

The foreign language department of Dallas Junior High School recently highlighted Foreign Language Month with an assembly at which the main speakers were foreign exchange students who are currently attending area high schools. Each student presented an introduction to his country and culture. Participants were: Luciano Ribiero, Brazil; Stell Fernanda Malta, Brazil; Saori Nakagawa, Japan; Margie Goetsch, South Africa; and Jochen Liske, West Germany.

Becky Geffert, a senior at Dallas Senior High School has won first place, a $100 bond, in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship competition. Becky also placed third in the district competition. The competition is designed to give high school students the opportunity to voice their opinions about their responsibility to our country.

40 YEARS AGO — 1978

Five Dallas Senior High School students took first place honors in the Luzerne County Federated Women’s Club art contest held Monday at Gus Genetti’s. First place winners are Debbie Karasek, general sewing; Carolyn Jones, oil and acrylics; Lori Spencer, tailoring; Jean Otto, pen and ink; and Lori Williams, water colors.

Kingston Township auxiliary members are planning a homemade chili supper for Thursday at the Trucksville Municipal Building. Committee members for the supper are: Mrs. Fred Buss, Mrs. Helen Misson, Mrs. Joseph Matosky, Mrs. August Stella and Mrs. Robert Misson.

Girls planning to participate in the Back Mountain Girls Softball program signed up at Dallas Elementary School last Saturday. Among the girls who signed up to play were Pam Corcoran, Renee Corcoran and Cathy Dunkleberger.

50 YEARS AGO — 1968

The majorettes will star in the Annual Spring Concert to be presented tomorrow night by Dallas Senior High School, under the direction of Lester R. Lewis. The program will begin at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The majorettes, who will perform in two numbers, are: Myra Shroer, head majorette, Suzanne Jozwiak, Phyllis Hanna, Elaine Heidel, Linda Whalen, Carol Crawford, Christine Rubino, Judith Reggie, Susan Sipple, Karen Long, Diane Hozempa, Priscilla Reese and Nancy Love.

Winner of the Fourth Annual Mathematics Contest held March 23 at Central Catholic High School, was a Gate of Heaven girl, Carol Fronczek, who received a gold medal for her proficiency. Other Gate of Heaven contestants were Margaret Crawford and Mary Stiles. The team made the highest score, and won a plaque.

60 YEARS AGO — 1958

Clark Mosier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Mosier, Dallas Township, was a unanimous selection for the All Star team at the thirty-first annual basketball tournament at Bloomsburg State Teachers College. Mosier was outstanding, scoring 87 points in four tournament games for an average of 21.25 points per game.

Eight Back Mountain people, Clifford E. Balshaw, Ruth T. Reynolds, Louie W. Ayre, Mrs. Harold Rood, Mrs. Albert Ide, Mrs. John Reid, Mrs. Alan Sanford and John Detroy, members of the Wilkes-Barre Chapter of American Guild of Organists, are taking an active part in arranging the recital to be presented by the internationally famous concert organist, E. Power Biggs, on April 14. The affair, being sponsored by the Chapter, will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

70 YEARS AGO — 1948

Dallas Township, Lehman and Kingston Township students rated among the winners this week at the Luzerne County Music contest of the Pennsylvania Music and Forensic League held in Forty Fort High School. Wilma Hess, Dallas Township Senior, and Betty Ide, Lehman High School, were judged superior in baton twirling. Barbara Hope, Dallas Township Junior, won a superior rating in the soprano contest for girls, and Harry Trebilcox, Kingston Township High School, won a superior rating in piano.

Bob Grose has been called by the Philadelphia Athletics to report for spring baseball practice at Red Spring, N.C. April 8. He will later be assigned to the Athletics’ farm team at Welch, West Virginia. For two years a shortstop on the Dallas Legionnaires team, Bob was picked for a try-out at the closed of last season by Athletic scouts. He is a former Dallas High School star player.
