20 years ago — 1997

Valerie Prothero, daughter of Jack and Carol Prothero of Dallas, will perform at the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona when Penn State plays Texas on January 1. She will also perform in the Fiesta Bowl parade. Valerie is a 4-year member of Penn State’s Marching Blue Band as a mellophone player. She has performed in the Citrus, Outback and Rose Bowls.

Hanford Eckman, of Dallas, has been named the newly appointed president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center (NEPIRC) Board of Directors. Eckman is the founder and chairman of Energy Convertors, Inc. (ENCON), located in Dallas.

The Lake-Lehman Middle Level Education Building students recently held their class officer elections. Officer candidates were required to file a petition consisting of student and teacher names, campaign, and then give a speech in front of the student body. Seventh grade officers: David Walters, president; Courtney Kosakowski, vice president; Chris Albee, treasurer; and Lindsey Boris, secretary. Eighth grade officers: Leigh Kosloski, president; Matt Dunn, vice president; Justin Mendygral, treasurer; and Janet Schweizer, secretary.

30 years ago — 1987

The Miniature Art Society of Florida recently announced that Dallas artist Sue Hand has won second place in the human figure category in the largest exhibit of miniature art in the United States. This international competition, held each year in Clearwater, Florida, is exhibited at the famous Kapok Tree Inn. Only a few hundred works are selected for the juried show out of thousands of entries from around the world. This is the fourth international art award that Sue Hand has received in the past three years, and the third year in a row that she has been a winner in the Florida show.

Five-year members of the Dallas High School soccer team who were awarded jackets at a recent banquet are: Kenny Klimovitz, Carl Wiedlich, mascot; Ed Reabuck, Ken Kozel, Mike Haggerty, John Ursiak, John Aston, Hugh Mundy, Chris Justus, Jeff Tinner, Darren Michael and John Masley.

The Student Council officers and representatives of Lake-Lehman High School were recently sworn into office in an induction ceremony held in the high school library. Officers are: Charles Cino, president; Molly Boyle, vice president; Christopher Maransky, treasurer; Wendy Bebey, secretary.

40 years ago — 1977

Scott Sherwood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sherwood of Shavertown, will represent Lake-Lehman High School at the All-State Chorus Festival to be held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Association Convention in Pittsburgh next weekend.

Scott placed first as a tenor last year at the Region IV State Choral Festival, and was selected to sing with the 300 voice choir at the PMEA Convention.

Five Dallas High School grapplers took honors in the Delaware Valley Holiday Tournament in December. They are: Jim Dierolf, first; Brian Corbett, second; Ken Kuderka, second; Mark Cook, third; Andy Pinter, third. The Mountaineers finished fifth in team standings.

Members of the Lions Mini Football League were honored at a banquet recently and were awarded trophies. Team members are: Terry Cummings, Robert Scruitsky, Ron Swingle, Vince Narsavage, Tom Hillman, Mark Boyle, Don Sutton, Kevin Bonham, Dan Walsh and Dave Penkrot.

50 years ago — 1967

Cub Scouts of Lehman Pack 241 recently held their Christmas Party at the Lehman Methodist Church. Taking part in the opening color ceremony were Kenny Wentzel, Ricky Wentzel and Harry Wesley.

Gleaners Class of Alderson Methodist Church met on Wednesday evening at the church for their Christmas Party. Mrs. Helen Hartman and Dorothy Hartman were hostesses. The worship service and singing of carols was in charge of Mrs. Theodore Heness. Mrs. Albert Armitage and Eleanor Humphrey had charge of the games.

60 years ago — 1957

Mrs. Bernice Hill will be seated as president of the Dorcas Society of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Shavertown, at the first meeting of the year Tuesday evening. Other officers: vice president, Mrs. Florence Fudge; secretary, Mrs. Loraine Shanglen; treasurer, Mrs. Ida Claus; and publicity chairman, Mrs. Miriam Gerhart.

Gay Blades skating rink, the safest skating place in the Back Mountain for young and old, opened on Sunday for the winter season. John Tibus, proprietor, says the four inch ice covers a pond only 14 inches deep at the middle, shallower near shore. Seventy-five kids showed up on Sunday, though the rink had not yet been officially opened, and some of them skated until midnight, when John shooed them home and cleaned up the ice.

70 years ago — 1947

Janet and Ruth Haycox entertained at a gay holiday party at their home on Main Street, Friday evening. Present were: Nancy Schooley, Polly Lazarus, Charlotte Michael, Tom Pierce, Bill Pierce, David Kunkle, Bob Hislop, Don Besecker, David Evans, Bobby Stair, Russell DeRemer, Bill Berti, Jack Pisney, Judy Powell and the hostesses.

Mrs. Ralph Whipp, Mrs. William Pilkonis, Miss Adeltha Miller entertained at a variety shower honoring Miss Jean Hildebrant, bride-elect, at the Whipp home in Shavertown Friday evening. Jean will marry Henry Phillips on January 8. Present were: Mrs. Ray

Major, Miss Peggy Davis, Mrs. Robert Phipps, Mrs. Stephen Johnson, Mrs. John Hildebrant, Miss Marian Hildebrant, the guest of honor and the hostesses.
