The arctic air that dropped temperatures well below freezing throughout the region is here to stay at least through Sunday.

Snow showers are in the forecast every day and night this week with the greatest chance of accumulating snowfall on Friday.

The high temperature on Tuesday was 15 degrees, recorded at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport at 4 a.m. It dipped to 10 degrees by 8 a.m. and rose to 13 degrees, where it stayed for much of the afternoon. Wind chills were in the negative numbers.

High temperatures are expected to be in the mid- to upper teens for the week, while low temperatures are predicted to be in the single digits to low teens.

The last time low temperatures were below zero was Jan. 24, 2011, when it plummeted to minus eight.

Single digits were recorded twice last winter, when 5 degrees was reported at the airport on Jan. 4 and Jan. 22, 2012, according to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, N.Y.

A pestering snowfall late Monday caused numerous vehicle crashes, including one involving a woman whose vehicle slid on a snow-covered South Main Street in Hanover Township. Lori Vanderlaan, of Plymouth, lost control of her 2001 Ford Explorer that slid into a wrought-iron fence at St. Mary's Cemetery and struck several tombstones and headstones just before 3:30 p.m. Monday, township police said.

Vanderlaan was transported to an area hospital for injuries, police said.

About 30 minutes later, police had another snow-related crash in Hanover Industrial Estates, where Donald Oakely, of Jessup, lost control of his 2005 Pontiac Vibe on New Commerce Boulevard. Oakely's vehicle rolled onto its side, police said.

Oakely declined medical treatment, police said.

Frigid temperatures and snow-covered roads forced area school districts to delay the start if classes Tuesday morning.

In the extended forecast, Monday's high temperature is expected to reach a warm 33.
