Tunkhannock Tigers top New Oxford Invitational wrestling tournament

Tunkhannock added its fifth tournament title and sixth championship of the wrestling season overall when the Tigers finished first out of 32 teams at the New Oxford Invitational Jan. 29-30.

The Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion Tigers had two individual champions at New Oxford.

Freshman Tommy Traver won the 126-pound title with a pin of Line Mountain’s Brian Earlston in 3:45. Sophomore Sam Rice won the 195-pound championship with a 5-4 decision of Susquehanna Township’s Devin Evans.

The latest tournament championship came just days after Tunkhannock wrapped up its solo division title. The Tigers had finished in a three-way tie for first last season.

Final WVC Division 1 standings: Tunkhannock 7-0, Hazleton Area 6-1, Dallas 5-2, Coughlin 4-3, Crestwood 2-5, Pittston Area 2-5, Wyoming Valley West 2-5, Berwick 0-7.
