Eighth tiebreaker — Criteria H — needed to resolve score

Staff report

The referee, scorekeepers and coaches needed to leave the Lake-Lehman gym Jan. 22 to sort out the winner of the wrestling match with Meyers that very likely will decide the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 title.

When they were done calculating, Meyers emerged as a 35-34 winner on Criteria H – the eighth tiebreaker.

The teams had finished in a 34-34 tie when Meyers, which trailed by as many as 18 points, rallied from 13 down by winning the last three of 14 bouts.

High school wrestling rules call for tiebreaker criteria to be used with the winning team being awarded an additional point for the official final score. The first seven methods used to try to break ties only yielded additional ties.

Criteria H involved the first scoring done in each bout.

Meyers produced 10 points to 9 by Lake-Lehman in those scenarios to win the battle of division unbeatens.

Austin Schuler (113), Rodney Driscoll (138) and Jake Tomolonis (160) all won by pins for the Black Knights.
