20 YEARS AGO — 1997

Students in three first grade classes at Lehman-Jackson Elementary School drew and painted placemats that were delivered by Wyoming Valley Meals on Wheels with Thanksgiving meals. Supervised by teachers Helene Dainowski, Jane Manaeval and Rita Fox, the students made a total of 80 placemats. Among the participating students were Julianna Davis-Dorzinsky, Ashley Redmond, T.J. Brandt, Catherine Sullivan, R.J. Dante, Melissa Attanasio, Matthew Scavone, Joseph Harrison and Cara Wengen.

Veterans, their families and friends gathered Sunday, December 7 at the Daddow-Isaacs American Legion Post to commemorate the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A moment of silence was observed at 7:58 a.m., the time of the first strike. Among the participants were George Nichols, Lehman, U.S. Navy; Pete Roushey, Shavertown, Air Force; Elwood Ide, Dallas, Marines; Tom Templin, Dallas, Army Rangers; Wendell Jones, Shavertown, Air Force; Conrad Orchard, Trucksville, Army; Steven Chisarick, Dallas.

30 YEARS AGO — 1987

Janel Fabian, a sophomore student at Bishop O’Reilly High School, Kingston, has been named the school’s Hugh O’Brian Youth Ambassador for 1987-88. She will attend the foundation’s Leadership Seminar to be held in March in Lancaster. Janel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Fabian of Shavertown.

A quick score and a key defense stand in the first half set the stage for a second-half rally Saturday as the Dallas Mountaineers claimed their first Eastern Conference Class B title with a 20-16 win over Scranton Prep. Mike Koprowski’s two short fourth-quarter touchdown runs erased 16-7 lead and gave Dallas the win in the game which was played before about 1,800 fans at Gatto Stadium, Dunmore.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

An experience in international politics was gained by students from Lake-Lehman and Dallas Area high schools Sunday at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre as they participated in a model Security Council sponsored by the college Political Science forum. Lake-Lehman represented Mexico and Egypt, while Dallas Area took the part of India and the United States. Participants included Corey Zimmerman, Jane Otto and Linda Overman, Dallas Area students; and John Ziminski, Valerie Jachimowicz and Larry Williams, Lake-Lehman students.

Ten seniors from Dallas High School have been getting a taste of college life while attending drafting and design classes at Penn State Wilkes-Barre campus in Lehman every Tuesday afternoon for the past five weeks. Their advanced studies designed for students who are considering a career in drafting ranged from determining their own height and weight metrically to tool design and orthographic drawing. Participants are: Kevin Newberry, Glenn Yeeles, Mike Kapral, David Pellam, Robert Eipper, Becky Bestwick, Jerry O’Neill, Lori English, Susan Banks and Jane Bauer.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

Once again it’s Christmas and the members of the Dallas Women’s Club Chorale have been rehearsing for the past ten weeks to bring to the people of the Wyoming Valley a truly beautiful Christmas Program. As in the past, the chorale will start to sing on December 1st and entertain at luncheons, dinners, civic and service meetings and at Holiday parties through December 22nd. Members of the chorale are Mrs. Al Turner, Mrs. George Yatsko, Mrs. Charles Mahler, Mrs. Paul Lauer, Mrs. William D. Jones, Mrs. Glenn Case, Mrs. Willis Hapeman, Mrs. Robert Carey, pianist; Mrs. William Carroll, director; Mrs. Donald Law, Mrs. John Williams, Mrs. Leo Mohen, Mrs. John Brown, Mrs. Joseph Kaminski, Mrs. Robert Kirchner, Mrs. Robert Spears, Mrs. Lamont Holdsworth, Mrs. John McGoey, Mrs. Joseph Katyl, Mrs. William Walp, Mrs. Victor Cross, Mrs. Ralph Fitch and Mrs. Walter Davidson.

Brownie Troop 635, which meets at the Carverton Methodist Church, held its investiture ceremony Thursday evening. Each girl was “turned into” a Brownie beside a make believe pond by candlelight. She then made her promise and received her Brownie Pin from her leader, Mrs. Mary Ann Meeker and her World Association Pin from Mrs. Heldegard Wolfe. Those invested were: Patty Culver, Marion Supulski, Denise Sigworth, Donna Cobleigh, Donna Hoover, Kathy Perry, Betty Casterline and Patty Welliver.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

William F. Cutten and Robert W. Parry were welcomed to Back Mountain YMCA Board at the regular board meeting at headquarters Monday night. Mr. Cutten, Bunker Hill, is owner of the Cutten Gas Company. Mr. Parry, Monroe Avenue, Dallas, manages the Acme store in Shavertown.

Bird Club members toured Back Mountain lakes Saturday afternoon to spot ducks, and ended the day at Frank Jackson’s bird feeders at Harveys Lake. Among the club members were: Edwin Johnson, president; Mrs. Arnott Jones, Mrs. Roger McShea, Basil Nichols, Mrs. T.M.B. Hicks, Misses Adelia Stevens and Helen Crane.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

A menu of creamed chicken on biscuits, gravy, mashed and sweet potatoes, peas, cabbage, cake and coffee will be served at the Community Cafeteria Supper in Dallas Township School Saturday by the band committee. Proceeds will be used to buy new band uniforms. Committee members and workers: Mrs. Andrew Stash, Mrs. Mary Kamor, Mrs. Charles Lipp, Mrs. Roy Tryon, Mrs. Melvin Mosier, Mrs. Earl Lamoreaux, Mrs. Walter Brunges, Mrs. Clifford Ruggles, Mrs. Hayward Lancio and Mrs. Harry Bellas.

Mrs. Elwood Lutsey of Summit Street, Shavertown, entertained the Football Mothers of Kingston Township High School Tuesday evening. Plans were made for the banquet to be held next week. Present were: Mrs. Fred Handley, Mrs. J.D. Richards, Mrs. Claude Johnson, Mrs. Vought Long, Mrs. Thomas Cleasby, Mrs. Francis Youngblood, Mrs. Lincoln Long, Mrs. Jacob Harrison and the hostess.
