20 YEARS AGO —1997

Lake Silkworth Area Lions met recently at the Red Rooster Restaurant, Pikes Creek, for a dinner meeting. Officers for the new year were installed by Vice-District Governor Andrew Gotcha. New officers are: Rita Stefanowicz, president; Lillian Piatt, vice-president; Wayne Petit, treasurer; and Tony Stefanowicz, secretary.

The Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus Alumni Society recently held its “Masters” Golf Tournament to benefit the student scholarship fund. Winning team members were awarded Penn State “Masters” blazers. Winners are: John Kotis, Chet Blazick, Ray Cecconi and Tom Stitzer.

30 YEARS AGO — 1987

Sandy Maciejczak of Sweet Valley entered her 1927 green Buick in Sunday’s Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors Antique Car Show and won one of the top three prizes in her class. Sandy, who has owned the car for one month, obtained the car after the death of the late Marty Stefanski. Sunday was the first show in which she entered the car.

Dallas resident Richard Disque II, his wife Lois and daughter Leigh Anne were among the few fortunate enough to spend time with Mother Teresa on her visit to Scranton last Sunday. Disque, a pilot affiliated with Forty Fort Airport, was asked to fly the 76-year-old “living saint” to New York’s LaGuardia Airport.

Leaving family and friends behind isn’t an easy thing to do as Maria Stallone and Anna Jansson discovered last Wednesday. Maria, of Parsonage Street in Dallas, left her family to spend a year in Sweden as a Rotary Exchange Student, while Anna, a native of Sweden, was leaving behind friends she made during her year at Lake-Lehman High School as a Rotary Exchange Student.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

Cory Zimmerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Zimmerman, Dallas, was named Grand Charity at the Grand Assembly of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls in Pennsylvania, held last week at Penn State Campus, University Park, State College. Cory is a senior at Dallas High School.

Ferdinand Liva, Jr., 11-year-old Dallas violinist, will appear in a string recital which will be presented by the Liva Violin Class on Sunday at the Wyoming Seminary Day School in Forty-Fort. The youthful violinist, son of Ferdinand and Algerta Liva, Dallas, is well known in the Dallas Public Schools for having performed violin solos in school programs and shows. He is known by his schoolmates as Dino.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

Little League Championship Team for 1967 in the Back Mountain are the pleasant lads from Lehman-Jackson, who won at the playoff game on Sunday afternoon, defeating Dallas Dairy by a score of 4 to 3: Eddie Onzik, Don Rollman, Eddie Zielan, Bobby Moyer, Ricky Bingaman, Jimmie Cook, Charles vans, Bill Frey, Randy Cornell, Walter Babetski, Gary Baker and Ricky McCarty.

The Lake-Lehman Band Sponsors Summer Festival will be held this Saturday at the Lehman Horse Show Grounds starting at 12 noon. There will be entertainment, food and plenty of games. Co-chairmen are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Yankowski.

Attending a recent two day conference of Young Democrats of Eastern Pennsylvania were two couples from Jackson Township. They are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allardyce and Mr. and Ms. Ray Malak. The affair, which was held at the Holiday Inn, Wilkes-Barre, featured Robert P. Casey, former Senator from Scranton as principal speaker.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

Harveys Lake Post No. 967, American Legion has elected officers for the year 1957-58, naming Leo Wadowski commander. Other officers are: Basil Frantz, president; Alger Shafer, senior vice-commander; Joseph Desiderio, junior vice-commander; Leo Yankoski, finance officer and adjutant; Calvin Strohl, service officer; James Correia, historian; and Allen Brace, sergeant-at-arms.

A trip to New York to hear Billy Graham is in the making for young people and parents in this area. A chartered Martz bus will leave Shavertown Bible Church Saturday morning and return late the same night. Martha and Carol Fitzgerald, who are arranging the trip, have been to New York to hear Mr. Graham three times this summer, and feel the time is well spent.

Members and friends of the Dallas Methodist Church W.S.C.S. are invited to attend a tea at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Thomas, Highland Acres, Wednesday. Mrs. Sheldon Curtis will entertain with a reading. Committee members are Mrs. Vern Groff, Mrs. Lawrence Updyke, Mrs. Sterling Machell, Mrs. Ralph Elston and Mrs. David Evans.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

Mrs. Elsie Wesley entertained members of Kings Daughters of Church of Christ of Sweet Valley at her home last Tuesday. Present were: Mrs. Hilda Leinthall, Mrs. Martha Berth, Mrs. Freda Hartman, Mrs. Gladys Hartman, Mrs. Irene Alexander, Aletha Cragle, Eleanor Williams, Hazel Hontz, Sara Casterline, Celia Klenovich, Miss Bethia Allen, Miss Keziah Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rood, Rev. and Mrs. E.J. Waterstripe and the hostess.

June Kistler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Kistler, Alderson, was elected teacher of commercial subjects at a special meeting of Dallas Township School Board Monday night to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Jane Darrow.
