20 YEARS AGO — 1997

The Luzerne County Community College Student Government Association (SGA) recently held a cheerleading contest for high school senior varsity cheerleaders. First, second and third-place awards were given for cheer and pom routines. The Lake-Lehman senior varsity cheerleading squad were the winners of the George McCutcheon Spirit and Enthusiasm Award, given in honor of the former advisor to the SGA. Squad members are: Stacy Rosenbaum, Carrie Houssock, Melissa Morrow, Tara Coletti, Kristi Snyder, Amy Hartzell, Amanda Gable, Gary Ann Morgan, Pam Kram, Koren Hackling, Kelly Caell, Crystal Kordowski, Eric Pimm, Carrie Race and Chavon Croman.

Wrestlers from the Back Mountain Wrestling Club recently participated in the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association District Tournament held at Hughesville High School with the top three finishes able to advance to the MAWA Regional Tournament. Members of the club finished as follows: John Young, Bantam 40, 1st place; Derek White, Junior 82, 2nd place; Donovan White, Bantam 44, 2nd place; Jeremy Schutz, Junior 70, 3rd place; John Walter, Intermediate 105, 3rd place; Sean Corcoran, Junior Hwt., 2nd place; Michael Yenason, Intermediate 90, 2nd place; Andrew Harrison, Junior 98, 3rd place.

30 YEARS AGO— 1987

James Kelly, of Trucksville, recently participated in the Luzerne County Mock Trial Competition at the Luzerne County Court House. Kelly, a student at Bishop O’Reilly High School, Kingston, played the role of an attorney. O’Reilly defeated Pittston Area in first-round competition.

Lake-Noxen Brownie Troop 704 has been busy during the last few months. The girls enjoyed a Valentine Skating Party, The Kirby Film Festival and the Shrine Circus. Members of the troop are Jessica Finch, Jennifer Reno, Melissa Birt, Katie Finch, Becky Scott, Joelle Elgaway, Laurie Finnigan, Christina Tuzinski, Jamie Weivell, Lisa Croman, Kelly Jo Spencer, Becky Blaine, Tracey Long, R. Scott, Barbara Shaver, Kim Spencer, Stacey and Mandy Kehler, and Debbie and JoAnn White.

Three members of the “Award Winning” Lake-Lehman High School Band were chosen to represent their region at the Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association All-State Band Festival to be held May 6-9 in Philadelphia. Receiving the honors are Danny Smith, Kathy McAvoy and Betty Rakowski.

40 YEARS AGO — 1977

Winners of the Easter Bunny coloring contest in Westmoreland Elementary School, sponsored by the Kingston Township Police Department, were awarded large stuffed animals by Patrolman Lou Rozelle. Theme of the contest was, “What the Easter Bunny Should Look Like.” Winners were: Marilyn Ward, Grade 3; Steve Ashworth, Grade 4; Bill Jones, special ed; Kelly Terescavage, kindergarten; Joy Bearley, Grade 1 and Melanie Coscia, Grade 2.

Dallas Senior High School will present its all-school production of William Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” next Friday and Saturday. The comedy features seniors Susan Zapoticky and Rob Johnson as Kate a Petruchio, two strong-willed people who come to terms as a married couple.

50 YEARS AGO — 1967

The A.A.A. Safety Poster Contest sponsored jointly on the local level by the Wyoming Valley Motor Club and Kiwanis presented prizes and listed honorable mentions last Thursday at the Hotel Sterling. In the primary-elementary division, the following students were recognized: Pamela S. Porter, age 11, a sixth grade student at Westmoreland Elementary School, Trucksville, won first prize. Donna Holcomb, age 11, a sixth grade student at Westmoreland Elementary School, Trucksville, was awarded second prize.

A group of Back Mountain area residents were among the members of the Wilkes-Barre and Scranton Advertising Clubs who welcomed Jo Foxworth, Advertising Woman of the Year in 1966, to the annual Spring Joint Dinner Meeting of the clubs. Back Mountain members are Mr. and Mrs. Arnott Jones, June MacCloskey, Blanche Thompson, Miss Elizabeth Hesser and Don Smith.

60 YEARS AGO — 1957

A 1950 Tudor Ford belonging to Abe Simons, Fernbrook–Demunds Road was completely destroyed by fire Sunday morning at 1:30, when it burst into flames while standing in the yard. Dr. Henry M. Laing Fire Company responded to the call, but the car was already beyond help. A short circuit is presumed to have caused the blaze. Mr. Simons estimated the loss at around $250.

The Annual Antique Show of the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Dallas, will be held in the parish hall May 7th and 8th. Mrs. Charles Flack is chairman of the show, aided by co-chairmen Mrs. Henry Doran and Mrs. B. Wright Yocum. Publicity will be handled by Mrs. Roswell Patterson, Mrs. James Lacy, Mrs. Sheldon Evans and Mrs. Ralph Smith.

70 YEARS AGO — 1947

Newly organized Future Homemakers of America Club of Lake Township High School traveled to Tunkhannock on Tuesday to be the guests of the Tunkhannock Chapter. At the meeting, the following members were initiated: Helen Harding, Joyce Hoover, Nellie Kitchen, Diana Nienius, Ruth Oney, Virginia Wolfe, Gladys Burkhardt, Ethel May, Rebecca McColation, Genevieve Stefanowicz, Clara Sutton, Shirley Gordon, Ann Gray, Mary Javer, Alice Lozier, Rita Nicholas, Joan Shiner, Bette Smith, Isabelle Wilkins, Erma Crispell, Dorothy Gray, Ada Gordon, Audrey Harris, Rebecca Hummel, Iris May, Eleanor Newell, Dolores Robert, Carol Scouton and Margaret Truska.

Robert Currie has reported that twelve prospective bridge sharks signed up at the Shavertown Youth Center either to learn to play or to improve their game. Herbert Stark of Kingston, the teacher, is a qualified bridge instructor.

Mozart Club will present a two-piano ensemble program in Kingston Township Presbyterian Church Tuesday evening. Back Mountain pianists taking part will be Mrs. Louie Weigand Ayre, Mrs. Margaret Gordon and Mrs. Irene Jones.
