DALLAS TWP. — The day started just like any other work day for Debbie Beynon and her daughter, Katie.

They arrived at Mary Taylor’s Hair and Skin Care Center at 415 Memorial Highway last Tuesday and were about to unlock the door when Katie’s eyes saw something different, something colorful sitting under a bench.

A stone with a lighthouse painted on it was placed under the bench, next to a cat figurine.

“We wondered which one of our customers put the rock here,” said Debbie, the owner of the business location.

Upon further investigation, the women discovered the stone was part of a nationwide activity called Casper Rocks.

“I heard about Casper Rocks on the news,” Debbie said.

The trend started nearly a year ago. It involves painting family-friendly images or inspirational saying on rocks and then placing them in public areas for others to find.

The message on the back of the rock Debbie and Katie found described the game’s simple rules, “Back Mountain Painted Rocks Facebook#BMPR Post pic and rehide.”

Debbie and Katie visited the Facebook page and learned more stones were placed throughout the Back Mountain, including a ladybug rock left outside the Lehman Nursery at 18 Idetown Road in Lehman Township.

Lehman Nursery offered a variety of hiding places, but the stone’s bright red and black paint was easy to spy.

Myrtle Chamberlain, the owner of the nursery, said she found the stone last week and left it in place to make customers smile.

Chamberlain said her friend, Darcie Yetter Gudger, placed the painted stones around the region while she was in town visiting.

“She is lives in Wyoming (the state) and came in to visit,” Chamberlain said. “Casper Rocks is a big thing there.”

An attempt to reach Gudger for a comment was unsuccessful but the BMPR Facebook page reveals her purpose is to promote happiness.

Debbie and Katie appreciated the “gift” and plan to relocate the stone near the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation in Dallas Township to make someone else smile.
