YMCA honors slated

WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA will honor Michael J. Hirthler, Clayton Karambelas., Eric Mahler, Esq., and Air Excellence at the organization’s 2017 Leadership Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Westmoreland Club, 59 S. Franklin St. A cocktail reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. along with a silent auction, followed by dinner and awards at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Leadership Dinner are $100 per person. Corporate sponsorships, program ads and tickets are available by calling Jamie Dudick at the YMCA at 570-970-5027 or emailing her at Jamie.Dudick@wbymca.org. Proceeds from the event will benefit YMCA programming.

Hirthler, of Jackson Township, will receive the 2017 George Brandt Community Service Award. The award, named the late YMCA board member George Brandt, is given to a volunteer that provides exceptional service like Brandt did as an active member and volunteer of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA for more than 60 years.

Hirthler joined the YMCA Board of Trustees in 2012. He is an executive committee member and serves as the chairman of Phase II of the Capital Fundraising Campaign.

He is involved with various organizations including the Catholic Youth Center, Volunteers in Medicine, The Luzerne Foundation, the Salvation Army, Junior Achievement of NEPA, and others.

His commitment to providing opportunities for all led to recognition, along with his wife Kathleen, in being selected as the recipients of the Mary Bevevino Community Service Award of The Luzerne Foundation in 2012.

Karambelas, of Kingston, will receive the 2017 Robert K. Mericle Leadership Award, which honors an individual who furthers the mission of the YMCA and enhance the quality of life in the community.

Mahler, of Mountain Top, will receive the 2017 Frank M. Henry Layperson of the Year Award. The award recognizes an unsung hero at the YMCA, one who contributes their time and services for the betterment of the organization and the local community.

Samanas appointed manager

WILKES-BARRE — Allison Samanas, of Dallas, was appointed Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis at King’s College.

She is responsible for developing and implementing the long-range planning and forecasting processes, including budgeting and financial management of operations, current and emerging programs, and strategic goals. Also, Samanas will be responsible for bank relations and communications along with several process improvement projects at the college.

Samanas earned a bachelor degree in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University. She is currently pursuing a master in business administration degree at the University of Scranton.

Sweeney inducted into honor society

SELINSGROVE — Kelly Sweeney, of Shavertown, has been inducted into the Order of Omega Greek honor society at Susquehanna University.

Sweeney is a history and communication arts-communication studies major in the Class of 2018.

A 2014 graduate of Lake-Lehman High School, she is the daughter of John and Ann Sweeney.

Jacobs joins Residence Life Staff at Lebanon Valley College

ANNVILLE — Kelly Jacobs was selected to serve as a Residential Mentor at Lebanon Valley College for the 2017-18 academic year.

A graduate of Dallas Senior High School, Jacobs is pursuing a bachelor of arts in economics from Lebanon Valley College.

Sohns named to honors list

MADISON, NJ — Margaret Sohns, of Tunkhannock, a student at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham Campus, located in Madison, N.J., has been named to the honors list for the spring 2017 semester.

Gill makes spring dean’s list

DOYLESTOWN — Caitlin Gill, of Dallas, was honored for academic achievement by being named to the dean’s list at Delaware Valley University for the spring 2017 semester.

Olenginski receives physician’s coat

DALLAS TWP. – Danielle Olenginski, of Shavertow,n was among 18 Misericordia University students who recently received their physician coats at a completion ceremony.

At the ceremony, the cohort of 18 students received their second white coat, a longer coat than the one they initially received the previous year signifying program completion. In addition, the students took the Physician Assistant Professional Oath, reminding them to always put the health, safety and privacy of their patients first and at all times be professional.

Locals at Lebanon Valley College

ANNVILLE, PA — Lebanon Valley College welcomed a record number of incoming freshman this fall that totaled 513 first-year students.

Local students in the mix are Rebecca Ford, of Shavertown; Charles Kuschke, of Harveys Lake; and Owen Morgan, of Dallas, all graduates of Lake-Lehman High School.

Reynolds is drum line co-captain

WILKES-BARRE — Matthew Reynolds, of Dallas, was named drum line co-captain for the Wilkes University Marching Colonels. The region’s only collegiate marching band marches in drum corps style, complete with wind and percussion instruments and guard.

McMonagle is head drum major at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE — Courtney McMonagle, of Shavertown, was named head drum major for the Wilkes University Marching Colonels. McMonagle will serve as field leadership and conductor of the Marching Colonels as they take the field for their fourth season in fall, 2017. McMonagle is a history and poltical science duel- major.

Three locals join Marching Colonels

WILKES-BARRE — The Wilkes University Marching Colonels welcomed new band members this fall. Local residents joining the marching band include:

Hunter Bowma, of Tunkhannock, who plays the tuba; Ryan Hulbert, of Dallas, who plays the euphonium; and James Vitale, of Trucksville, who plays the trumpet.
